1.
Start by checking that the wall is flat and smooth and that the surface is stable. Fill and sand where necessary. Start in the most eye-catching corner of the room. From there, wallpaper in one direction, followed by the other. This way, any small misses in things like pattern alignment will be less visible. It is important to hang the first strip straight. For this reason, always use a spirit level and draw a perfectly straight vertical line roughly 53cm from the corner so that you can see and use this when placing the first strip.

2.
Use a brush to apply wallpaper paste next to skirting boards and cornices.

3.
Apply paste to the wall using a roller.

4.
Pull the first wallpaper strip up towards the ceiling, affix it lightly at the top and check that it is straight using either a spirit level or the vertical line that you have drawn. Once straight, firmly press the upper part of the strip into place and cut it along the cornice. It is good to have a holder or tray on the floor for the roller, but if the floor is clean it is fine to go without.

5.
Smooth out the rest of the strip using the wallpapering tool, moving from the middle upwards, then from the middle downwards and finally around the edges, drying off any residual paste on the wallpapering tool between strokes. Please note that wallpaper brushes are too soft to smooth out air bubbles: use the wallpapering tool.

6.
Press down the edges and cut the paper at the skirting board using a sharp razor blade.

7.
Repeat steps 4–6, aligning the pattern with that of the previous strip where necessary.

8.
Clean off any residual paste using a damp sponge. Don’t be afraid of using generous amounts of water here – it won’t damage the wallpaper. Always clean between each strip.

Top tips: have your tools close at hand and change your razor blade regularly. Don’t forget each razor blade has four edges!
